The design lay-out may have involed a centerline
from front to back along the top of the car for a balanced semetry. Its the first thing I would do if I were painting John's car. The top would be an area difficult to reach and work on, equally hard to inspect or view. Ergo a simple design, some busywork that would look OK at eye level. Good luck with the TV.

I think our museum colleagues in Alberta have done some fine work in exploring different facets of the human story in that part of the world. I really look forward to seeing how they treat the Alberta story in the new Royal Alberta Museum. I believe that our role is not to sanitise the events and texture of the past. When re-imagining the history galleries, please ensure that you direct your good team to create a gallery fitting to delicate tastes. I was once in a Museum in Edmonton that had the shameless temerity to display "artifacts" related to illicit drug consumption. Kindly do not follow the path of your backwards neighbors. I'd expect that the museum inhabiting the proud city named after the most regal of all monarchs would never stoop to such base pandering.

Re-introduce stimuli for the senses: everyone I know mourns the passing of the apple pie smell. The cannery should smell like salmon! The barn should smell like cow manure! Honestly - the real world is full of smells - some of which delight, some disgust but any one of them can evoke a powerful memory or unlock a sensation.

I had no idea that there was such a large process to accept items. It was really great to read about it.

I think that working with the Archives would be an amazing job, but one would definitely need to have focus in order to work there. I lose hours on Wikipedia on a weekly basis, so I can only imagine what it would be like to be surrounded by all that history on a regular basis.

What's so great about this is that you get your staff to nominate each other for their good work. Too often, I've heard other people within a museum speak poorly of their visitor service staff - that they are not intelligent or just till cashiers. They are much, much more than that. Well done for valuing the people who give value to your museum!

I have two for you, both from the American Museum of Natural History.
One is DINOSAURS and the other is COSMIC DISCOVERIES. They are both made up of hundreds of photographs. You just touch them, and they open up to show separate pictures and then, even, you can touch the pictures and get the detail of each and every one. A fantastic time waster!!!!
Looking forward to seeing the RBCM app.

Hello Judy,
I spoke with the Manager of Natural History, and fellow blogger, Kelly Sendall and he said the museum has been acquiring specimens for its natural history collections since 1886. The specimens you see in our exhibitions have come to the museum in a variety of ways. In the past curators went out to hunt and trap animals for their collection. Our scientists still collect specimens,for research purposes not display, following strict conservation guidelines and employing humane techniques.We also get animals from members of the public who bring in animals that have died accidentally on the road or their property. I hope that answers your question.

A friend once told me about an extraordinary encounter... she and her husband were kayaking out in the waters of Haida Gwaii when they saw an object in the water ahead - a large blob with two small blobs on either side. They paddled toward it. Only when they were a few metres away did they realise it was the head of large bear paddling for all he was worth across a wide stretch of ocean. They turned and paddled very briskly away.

2. U. of Lethbridge; 1990; 20 herbarium sheets of Senecio jacobaea (ragwort)

Thanks for the opportunity to look at the info on the loans collection. I also was surprised and now informed on one of the roles of the RBCM. When I went to Google Earth I wondered what part of the RBCM collection was borrowed and sent to Lethbridge Alberta.

Thanks everyone who participated - I enjoyed reading your comments. It gives me a new respect for our curators who fib at "Artifact or Artifiction" - it's harder than it looks. The picture I posted is a platen press. This press is from the 1750s and came to BC in 1856 and was used in different areas around the province to print newspapers until the 1890s. This press uses a plate instead of a roller to press paper to inked letters. Who knows, it might even press a good panini.
